Now readers will fall in with Keladry of Mindelan -- Kel for short -- the first girl in ten years to begin training for knighthood since Alanna blazed the trail. Kel is only 10 years old, but as the daughter of an ambassador, she has been trained in combat and taught self-discipline and emotional control. She will need all these skills and much more to overcome the prejudices of the court -- she is only accepted on a year's probation, the first injustice, and most of her fellow trainees and many of her instructors disapprove of any girl training to become a page, let alone a squire or knight. But Kel does have some allies -- her intelligence, kindness and determination endear her to many of the palace servants, some instructors and a few enlightened classmates. Kel also wins the favour of some animal friends -- a flock of sympathetic sparrows adopts her and the meanest gelding in the student stable allows her to ride him. Kel also has a mysterious benefactor who rewards her tenacity with gifts fit for a true knight. The dirty tricks of her fellow pages do not deter Kel, and she fights several enemies hand-to-hand when she takes it upon herself to end the hazing of first-year students by older pages. Kel is strong and determined and most importantly, she follows the code: she does not whine or tattle on the boys who cause trouble in an effort to get rid of her. She is skilled, but far from perfect -- it is her discipline and hard work that allow her to master the many grueling tasks set for the pages. She proves herself and wins over many, but not all, of her detractors. This is excellent adventure writing -- there is tilting, arms practice and even a battle against fearsome Immortal creatures -- and readers will rejoice in Kel's triumphs, commiserate over her troubles and cheer her on to the year's end. Ages 10 and up. From the Publisher Keladry (known as Kel) is the first girl to take advantage of the decree that permits girls to train for the knighthood. The only thing that can stop her is Lord Wyldon, the training master of pages and squires. He does not think girls should be knights and puts her on probation for one year. It is a trial period that no male page has to endure and one that separates the friendly Kel even more from her fellow trainees. But Kel is not someone to underestimate. . . . About the Author In the sixth grade, Tamora Pierce was encouraged by her father to start writing and she immediately got hooked. Once she discovered fantasy and science fiction, she tried to write the same kind of stories she read, only with teenaged girl heroines who were usually missing from the 1960s stories. Before her junior year at the University of Pennsylvania where she studied psychology, Pierce rediscovered writing when she wrote her first original short story since tenth grade. She sold her first story a year later and then enrolled in a fiction writing course during her senior year. When her teacher suggested that she tackle a novel, her childhood ideas came back to her and she began her first sword and sorcery novel. Pierce then worked as a housemother in an Idaho group home for teenaged girls, who loved hearing Alanna’s story from the in-progress quartet, Song of the Lioness. As Pierce continued to write and send out manuscripts, she moved to Manhattan to get her publishing career off the ground. Pierce still lives in Manhattan with her husband, writer/filmmaker Tim, and their three cats, two parakeets, plus a floating population of rescued wildlife. She enjoys her hectic life as a full-time writer and she hopes that her books leave her readers with the feeling that they can achieve anything if they want it badly enough. Tamora Pierce is a popular author of fantasy books for teenagers. In her latest quartet, Protector of the Small, readers follow heroine Kel as she rigorously trains for the knighthood.
